CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (2024-2026) is a two-year research project that is inspired by Allen Hynek’s book with the same title from 1972.
Allen Hynek proposed a categorisation of UFO sightings, dividing these into three stages:
Stage 1 — Visual testimony from a distance of less than 150 metres, on which a degree of detail becomes clear and an angle of movement can be deduced.
Stage 2 — Physical traces of the event: impressions on the landscape, power failures or physiological effects on people.
Stage 3 — The final step involves direct contact with a living entity.
Thinking about a classification of contact or interaction on a varying scale, Out of Sight uses this framework to reflect on its interactions with artists, partners, audience, and local community. We find meaning both in the works or artists we present in our programmes, as much as in the relationships we build together.
Throughout these two years Out of Sight organises exhibitions, performative events, public gatherings, screenings.
