Visite # Light & Lightning

On Sunday, 18 October, during the Geographies of Listening festival, Visite # Love & Lightning programmed by Eva van Tongeren takes place at Out of Sight.

Old women and men in America today are percieved as a class of liminal beings who daily commit public nuisances as they clutter up space and use up resources just by staying alive. Old bodies are seen as abject. They walk among us as living testimony to deatch and decay. They walk among us deformed yet still desiring, still consuming, still lusting, still covetous, still angry, still proud.

Now that your body and subjectivity are not useful for reproduction and production, use them as autonomous sites for your own resistant research into uselessness, obsolenscence and pleasure, be it physical, social, political, emotional, or spiritual. Refuse to shut op and hide!

Marie Losier’s feature documentary Peaches Goes Bananas takes an intimate look at artist and musician Peaches’ playful and intoxicating world both on and off stage. As the temperature never stops rising whenever Peaches performs, the film will inhabit all the heated energy of a dissident of the pop-electronic age who inspires global audiences by breaking the boundaries of gender, form and identity. Theatrical spaces, new fantastical territories, mind bending sets – the Peaches arena is a place where she reignites life, and invites the world to be a little more of this, a little more of that. Peaches undermines gender roles, adopting a comic array of male attributes, and queers her own iconic image as female sex symbol. Peaches is widely recognized as being original, and one of those unique contemporary figures of the antichrist. Peaches is tough. Peaches is tender. Who is Peaches?

Eva van Tongeren initiated Visite, a temporary, reciprocal collage of experimental, political, and documentary cinema that reshapes itself each time into a unique event, taking its cue from the artists, partners, context, and resources of the moment.

Within this framework, Eva organises the series Visite # Love & Lightning, which delves into Love & Lightning: A Collection of Queer and Feminist Manifestos, compiled by Girls Like Us and Sarah Van Binsbergen. The publication is both an ode to and an acknowledgement of the many writers, thinkers, and activists who have shaped the multifaceted queer and feminist thinking we know today, while embracing ambiguity and polyvocality.

The format of this series deliberately places reading, moving images, and conversation alongside one another. A manifesto is approached both as a historical document and as a form of collective speech: a way to claim space, formulate resistance, and imagine a different future. The films complicate these texts by introducing other historical moments, bodies, and political contexts. Questions of gender identity, bodily autonomy, sexuality, representation, equality, and power move between text and image, past and present.
